Inadequate PPE still impacting mental health and well-being of frontline providers
According to a new report by i news, over one in three UK doctors have provided COVID-19 patient care without sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE). The article goes on to explain how this lack of appropriate protection has not only endangered the physical health of medical professionals, but also their mental health. Several shocking statistics among UK doctors were cited in the report, including:
- 1 in 5 reported drinking more alcohol since the pandemic began
- 27% reported eating more since the pandemic began
- 39% reported that social distancing guidelines have made home relationships more stressed
- 42% reported greater loneliness
While health systems and institutions around the world are racing to provide support for their staff, the UK ranked the "highest in workplaces offering activities to help with grief and stress" (55% compared to 43% in the US). 13 key trends that today's clinical leaders must know
Becker's Hospital Review's article, "What clinical leaders must know in today's climate: 13 key trends," highlighted the key takeaways from the Becker's Healthcare Clinical Leadership Virtual Event that took place earlier this month. The event brought health system executives and clinical leaders together to discuss trends and themes in clinical leadership. Here are a few of the key points that illustrated ways to mitigate clinician burnout during the most intense days in the medical practice:
- Leadership is the first line of defense against burnout
- One of the fundamental causes of physician burnout is a sense that physicians have lost control and can't do anything about the barriers preventing them from taking care of patients
- Adding clinical decision support to existing workflows does not mean care will improve or change. The right processes, incentives and ecosystem have to be in place first.
